Step 01 · Joint Lab

Move the idea. Then test the hardware.

Explore each joint concept in its own teaching diagram. Drag an arm’s white end point or use the angle slider beside it. The diagrams are not CAD assemblies, fit tests, or measurements of holding force. Reviewed 3D models appear here only when their source and physical fit records are approved.

Three joint studies

All three concepts are shown below. Each diagram moves independently; the detent’s optional snapping illustrates indexed positions only.

Study 01Illustrative

Plain pin

How freely should a panel rotate around a simple pivot?

Establish a low-part-count reference joint for later tests.

A pin does not intentionally hold a chosen angle; fit and play still need physical measurement.

Drag the white end point to rotate the arm. You can also focus it and use arrow keys.

Plain pin · 0°.

−90° to +90° is a display range, not a tested motion limit.

What the diagram marks

  • • Orange center: hinge pivot
  • • Blue bar: rotating arm
  • • Dark plate: common base

Try this

Move the arm to 45°, then reset it. Which center feature keeps the arm on its hinge axis?

3D inspection is pending a reviewed model and physical fit record for this joint. The diagram above is an illustrative teaching view.

Study 02Illustrative

Adjustable friction

Can adjustable contact resist motion while remaining usable?

Compare holding and breakaway effort at a chosen preload.

The schematic does not calculate torque, wear, or the effect of tightening a fastener.

Drag the white end point to rotate the arm. You can also focus it and use arrow keys.

Adjustable friction · 0°.

−90° to +90° is a display range, not a tested motion limit.

What the diagram marks

  • • Orange center: hinge pivot
  • • Pale ring: proposed washer contact
  • • Blue bar: rotating arm

Try this

Choose a display angle. What force measurement would tell you whether the contact can hold it?

3D inspection is pending a reviewed model and physical fit record for this joint. The diagram above is an illustrative teaching view.

Study 03Illustrative

Indexed detent

Can a joint return to a small set of repeatable positions?

Study discrete stops separately from continuous friction.

Illustrated angle snapping does not represent a ball, spring, force, or manufactured stop.

Drag the white end point to rotate the arm. You can also focus it and use arrow keys.

Indexed detent · 0°.

−90° to +90° is a display range, not a tested motion limit.

What the diagram marks

  • • Orange center: hinge pivot
  • • Dashed ring and dots: illustrative index positions
  • • Blue bar: rotating arm

Try this

Turn on 30° snapping and visit each visible stop. What test would show whether a real detent repeats those positions?

3D inspection is pending a reviewed model and physical fit record for this joint. The diagram above is an illustrative teaching view.

Physical test · Evidence status

No measurements published yet

The test procedure and blank data sheets are ready. No physical specimens, selected pin clearance, holding torque, wear result, or joint decision are documented here. The diagrams above remain teaching illustrations.

Open physical validation

01 · Common setup

One base, three cartridges

The planned fixture uses a shared pivot and mounting pattern, a nominal 100 mm lever, and separate pin, adjustable friction, and visible detent cartridges. Provisional CAD source exists; dimensions, fit, and print settings await physical review.

02 · Fit before testing

Candidate pin clearances

A coupon proposes 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3 mm CAD holes for a nominal 3 mm pin. These are test candidates; a clearance is chosen only after the print and fit are measured.

03 · Repeated trials

Project checkpoints

The planned checks are initial, 100, 250, and 500 cycles, with 1,000 optional. They are this project’s procedure, not an industry standard. Missing checkpoints remain unreported.

Method and decision

Each trial records load, direction, actual perpendicular arm, angle, specimen, revision, and print conditions. A separate calculation derives torque from mass or measured force; subjective usability stays in its own sheet. The decision template compares evidence against a specific body-panel need without a universal score.

Blank data sheets

These downloads contain headers only. The trial sheet records raw inputs; generated torque belongs in a separate report after genuine rows are available.
